The Mindset To Overcome by Lawson Aschenbach

Do you have a disease or a chronic issue that you are willing to do whatever it takes to overcome?

Too often, the answer is wrong. In this world of western medicine, self-diagnosing, self-prescribing, and the availability of millions of supplements and pharmaceuticals, many people would rather take the easy route to “fix” the problem.

In my mind, it’s because they are not educated on their options or they don’t have the right mindset.

Background

With western medicine, by treating the symptoms and not the cause, we continue to add people to the chronically ill list. People are willing to potentially lower their life expectancy by taking a pharmaceutical instead of addressing the core problem.

I’m not saying pharmaceuticals are terrible and no one should dare go near them. Pharma drugs save people’s lives every day. They have an essential place in the world.

However, most individuals would rather take a pill to lower their blood pressure or reduce the symptoms of their inflammatory disease as opposed to repairing the foundation of the issue.

Change Your Mindset

I feel our mindset around the world when it comes to any illness, disease, or specifically inflammation, needs to change.

We need to take a step back from our “take this pill and go about your life” thought process and start looking deeper into the alternative avenues back to the land of health and wellness.

For many years, I was constantly self-diagnosing, self-prescribing, and arrogant when it came to my health.

In reality, I had no idea what I was doing. I continued to take supplement after supplement, spending countless dollars thinking I knew best. Well, I didn’t. Nothing worked, and my anxiety went through the roof.

Hitting Rock Bottom

It seems that once people hit rock bottom, that’s when miracles happen. I’ve seen it with my own two eyes in many cases. Whether it has to do with business, a relationship, or a family related issue, we all witness incredible feats in our lifetimes.

In 2011, I was spiraling out of control with regard to my health. I was dizzy, lethargic, weak, and tired of being sick and tired. I’d had enough, and I finally realized that I needed help.

Years of digestive issues were hurting my ability to live my life to the fullest and compromising my career as a Professional Race Car Driver, robbing me of the dedication and focus I needed to succeed at a top level.

I finally hit rock bottom…

The Decision

It is at this point that you have two choices: 1) get the help you need OR 2) put yourself in a position to derail your life to the point of no coming back.

Fortunately, I chose the first one!

The first big step was going to a GI doctor to get a proper diagnosis. I wasn’t 100% committed, but there was a voice in the back of my mind pushing me to do the right thing.

I kept telling myself, “I can’t do this anymore. I WON’T do this anymore. I’m going to believe in other, more qualified, people and figure this out.” I’ll never forget that feeling.

Fortunately, I had a great GI doctor, who was willing to work with me. After some trial and error, we scheduled a colonoscopy. I was ready to figure this out once and for all.

And, we did! I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. Although I was scared out of my mind, I was glad to have an understanding of my issues, finally.

I’ll spare you the complete story (click here for more) and fast forward to the main point of this blog post.

Trusting A Practitioner

The key takeaway here is that I was able to end the vicious cycle of self-diagnosing and self-prescribing. I was the reason that my health and wellness hit rock bottom. Moreover, now, I remind myself every day to believe in other people. Getting over that hurdle was a big step.

Once I was introduced to a functional medicine practitioner, and my digestive disorder was completely gone after a few short months, I was changed forever. I realized that the idea of “I can do it myself” doesn’t always work.

If you are knowledgeable about a particular subject, then go for it. However, when you need help, you need help! You have to understand that the timeframe, anxiety, and, potentially, the cost will be significantly reduced if you work with people who know more than you do.

Summary

Having the right mindset is key to overcoming diseases and chronic problems and is the foundation for individuals who are battling to change their lives. Whether you have a disease, drug problem, relationship problem, or any other potentially life-altering conundrum, seek out an experienced professional.

For me, this was a functional medicine doctor. However, the professional you need can be a psychiatrist, dietitian, doctor, massage therapist, or many others.

Trust me; this will change your life. Believe in other people, and don’t battle important problems alone. Get help and raise your confidence level that you’re doing the right thing by giving qualified people access to your life!

Don’t wait to hit rock bottom, start today!

Never give up!
